The chicken miracle,

The present pair of paintings is accompanied by a written certificate issued by Dr Christof Metzger (2012). He writes: “Originally, the panels formed a larger ensemble — the life of the Saint is missing important events such as his sermon, his capture and his beheading, and even the miracle of the gallows is now reduced to two scenes. They certainly come from a winged altar devoted to the life and miracles of this popular saint... They definitely come from southern Germany, possibly Franconia; they date from around 1480. One of the most important artistic contributions to the German Late Gothic period in terms of depictions of Jacob, Friedrich Herlin’s high altar in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Franconia, could be viewed from 1466 onwards. It is therefore to be assumed that the artist who painted these two panels must have been familiar with this or a similar work, or, in any case, with Herlin’s realism, in which he was trained in the Netherlands.”
